Chapter 29
âIâm amazed at how quickly you got rid of that squatter,â Dusty was telling Bud over a glass of spritzer. They were seated in two antique wrought-iron chairs on a small patio in the front of the castle.
She continued, âOne minute he was here, the next, gone. Youâre very effective, I can say that.â
Bud sipped his drink, trying to figure out the flavor. Peach? Raspberry? He wasnât sure if Dusty was still mad at him or not for refusing to work as her private detective, but the way she was kind of fawning over him, he suspected she had some new task she wanted him to do.
âWould you like to come inside?â Dusty asked, pointing to the front doors of the castle.
âIâm OK, but thanks,â Bud replied. âMy wife canât wait to take the tour, but weâll wait until the big party youâre having. By the way, what flavor is this spritzer?â
âWatermelon,â she answered. âI get it at a specialty shop in Aspen. Itâs imported from Greece. I had no idea Greece grew melons, did you? Itâs quite good, isnât it?â
âDelicious,â Bud replied, though he really didnât think it was nearly as good as the watermelon spritzers Wilma Jean bought up in Price at Smithâs Grocery. But he was now wondering if maybe he shouldnât be trying to develop a new market for Kriderâs melons. Someone who made spritzers might be interested in buying some.
Now Dusty took on a more serious air.
âI used to be married to a very wealthy man,â she told Bud. âThere was a time I would never have condescended to drink mere spritzers. We lived high on the hog, so to say, and drank only fine wines.â
Bud replied, âWell, for me, spritzers are kind of a treat.â
Dusty smiled. âI wasnât raised wealthy, though we always had enough. When Callieâs estate finishes going through probate, Iâll be considerably well-off, and once I sell this stupid castle, Iâll be rid of this responsibility and can travel or do whatever I want. But how much do you want for getting rid of that nasty man with the dogs?â
Bud replied, âDusty, all I did was say hello to him, then give him a ride a couple of miles. Heâs still in the neighborhoodâstaying over on Gus Dearhammerâs property, your neighbor. Heâs actually an OK guy.â
Bud decided not to mention that Sprocket had found Callieâs diary, and probably on the castle grounds.
He continued, âBut the deal was that you have my friends play at the party, remember? No need to pay me, but I do need to get a check for them.â
âOf course,â Dusty said, reaching into her jacket pocket and handing Bud the check for Howie.
âTheyâre very excited to be able to play here, Dusty, so thanks for making that happen,â Bud replied.
Now Dusty shifted in her seat, leaning towards Bud, her long flowery dress catching the sun where silver threads formed little stars around the flowers.
âBud, I need your help. I know you already told me no, but Iâm begging you this time.
